Sunny Deol has put an end to months of speculation by confirming his involvement in Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious two-part cinematic adaptation of the Ramayana. Speaking at SCREEN Live in Mumbai, the Gadar 2 star revealed details about the highly anticipated project, describing it as a long-term venture aimed at redefining Indian cinema with cutting-edge technology.
“Ramayana is a long project because they’re trying to make it the way Avatar and Planet of the Apes movies were made. All those technicians are a part of it. The writer and director are very clear about the way it has to be and how the characters should be presented,” Sunny Deol said, offering a glimpse into the epic scale of the production.
While Sunny refrained from disclosing his role, industry buzz suggests he may portray Hanuman.
Ranbir Kapoor on Playing Ram in the Ramayana
Sunny Deol’s announcement comes shortly after Ranbir Kapoor confirmed his role as Ram in the project during the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah. Ranbir shared that he had completed filming for the first part of the franchise and would soon begin work on the second.
“It has two parts. I have finished the shooting of Part 1 and will shoot Part 2 soon. Just to be a part of that story, I am so humbled to essay Ram’s role. It’s a dream for me. It’s a film that has everything. It teaches what Indian culture is about — family dynamics and husband-wife dynamics,” Ranbir said.
Focus on Advanced Visual Effects
Given the backlash faced by Om Raut’s Adipurush for its subpar VFX, Sunny Deol explained that Tiwari’s Ramayana would stand out for its realism and high-quality special effects.
“You will also get to see the special effects that will make you believe that it (the events unfolding) has very genuinely happened rather than making one feel that these are special effects. To be honest, I’m very sure it’s going to be great and I’m sure that everybody will love it,” Sunny added, boosting anticipation for the film’s visual grandeur.
A Star-Studded Cast for the Epic Saga
The two-part franchise boasts a stellar cast, with Ranbir Kapoor as Ram and Sai Pallavi as Sita. Ravi Dubey has confirmed his role as Lakshman, while Kannada superstar Yash will portray Ravan. The project is being spearheaded by director Nitesh Tiwari, known for his blockbuster Dangal, and producer Namit Malhotra, who has shared his vision to bring this 5,000-year-old epic to life on the big screen.
The first part of Ramayana is slated for a Diwali 2026 release, with the second part scheduled for 2027.
