Sanam Saeed doesn't want Zindagi Gulzar Hai sequel, says “It’s important to not drag something that...”

Twelve years after Zindagi Gulzar Hai made Sanam Saeed and Fawad Khan household names, the actors are set to reunite on screen with Zee5’s Barzakh. Despite the enduring popularity of Zindagi Gulzar Hai, Sanam Saeed has expressed that a sequel is unlikely. In an interview with News18 Showsha, she explained, “A sequel wouldn’t offer the same magic because now they’re married. And once Zaroon and Kashaf are married, it will be boring. They have children by now and I doubt they have the same nok-jhok waala romance.”

The importance of moving on

Sanam emphasizes the need to move on from past successes instead of clinging to them. She stated, “It’s important to not drag something that did well. I’m not particularly a fan of sequels or remakes of something that’s already been done. I like to savour and hold on to those precious moments and shows and move on to the next one.” This perspective reflects her desire to explore new narratives and avoid repetitive storytelling.

Reuniting for Barzakh

While shooting Barzakh, Sanam and Fawad did not dwell on their past collaboration. “No (laughs)! That was ten years ago. I don’t think we like dwelling on the past. We shook hands and were happy to work together again. We braced ourselves for people’s reaction and tried our best to do something different,” Sanam shared. Their focus was on creating a fresh dynamic rather than recreating their previous roles.

Upcoming projects with Fawad Khan

After Barzakh, Sanam and Fawad will appear in Netflix’s first Pakistani original, Jo Bachay Hain Sang Samait Lo, and a SonyLIV original titled Shandur. Sanam revealed, “In one of them, the dynamic is similar to Zindagi Gulzar Hai. And yet the approach is different, the feel is different. If anything, we discussed how to not go back there.” This conscious effort to innovate indicates their commitment to evolving as actors.

Breaking away from Kashaf's image

Sanam candidly discussed the challenges of moving beyond her iconic role as Kashaf. “Audience ko humein Zaroon and Kashaf jaise dekhne ka khushi doosre projects se mil jaayegi but it was important for both of us to do Barzakh. It took me more than three years to shed the image of Kashaf,” she said. She acknowledged the difficulty of taking on new roles when a previous character has had such a strong impact but emphasized the importance of growth and change in her career.
